Toddlers Toddle at Malham Tarn May 2010

This trip to Malham Tarn was in conjunction with Gail Smith from the Yorkshire Dales. The trip was set as a reward for all the parents/carers and the toddlers that have been on a series of walks with the Baby and Toddler Group around Bradford and district over the past year.

I want to begin by saying ‘what a spectacular day!’ We had 16 people including Angie and I. There were 8 adults and 8 children and the youngest just 2 years old. We all met at the school grounds. There were a few new faces that I hadn’t met before. The parents and children were very excited and were asking where in the Yorkshire Dales we were going. They hadn’t been to Malham Tarn before and were looking forward to it.

I am sad to say we didn’t have the numbers we were expecting. So we had to return one mini bus, nevertheless that didn’t spoil our day.

On the way, the parents were asking what was planned for the day. Gail had organized activities for the day and I was certain that there was a walk included. The children were very bubbly and were chatting away about allsorts including what they had in their pack lunches.

Once we got to Malham Tarn I heard comments such as

“Wow”

“Beautiful”

“This is really nice”

“You can see the Lake”

Gail welcomed us and gave us a brief outline of the day.

We started off with a walk around the tarn, looking at all the different things. Gail asked the children what they could see and what was different from where they lived. The children were very excited and they started looking for insects and they also spotted cows in the field. They said they don’t see them in Shipley. Gail gave us a history lesson about the area and the parents were fascinated.

After the walk we had our lunch and I was very surprised to see lots of fruit! Some parents even baked their own buns! They all had very healthy pack lunches! They said they have been conscious of what the children are eating since the healthy eating sessions.

Gail had a few activities organized after lunch which included a ‘Bug Hunt’ ‘Finding the Rainbow’ another nature game and lastly the parachute game. The children and adults thoroughly enjoyed the games despite the rain.

We also got to see some beautiful baby rabbits. This was truly a perfect end to a perfect day.

There were some fantastic comments throughout the day, here are just a few:

“Very romantic place, will be back with the partner”

“It’s just so beautiful here and its free, will be back on the bus”

“I will definitely be back with my family”

“It has been a wonderful day, we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves”

“I have been to the Dales before but this is by far the best trip”

“Can we organize this again next year?”

Overall fantastic day out! Not only was it a great day out but an educational one too!!!
