Toddlers Toddle at Ilkley Park - March 2010

Another successful event! The parents, carers, toddlers, nursery children and staff of Windhill Primary School had another opportunity to enjoy a great morning out with the toddlers. Angie the parental worker at Windhill School and I had set up a walk at Ilkley park. This was our third walk and we were joined by the nursery children and staff who have merged with the Baby and Toddler Group. This was the nursery children’s first walk and there was a lot of pressure to impress them.

The children were very excited despite the weather letting us down. All in all we had 22+ adults and children turn up and two mini buses!

We all met at the school and loaded all the children and adults in the mini buses. Once strapped in, we were rearing to go! We arrived at Ilkley Park at 9.40am and we started with allowing the children and adults play in the play area. Angie asked the families if they had been to Ilkley Park before and apart from two people everyone else had been before. Comments were made such as:

“This is really nice; I could come here with the kids if a bus gets us here”

“Will definitely be back in summer with a picnic”

“This brings back memories”

The children played for a short while and we then went for a walk around the beautiful bridge and over the river. The children were stepping in puddles and splashing about. They were really enjoying themselves and so were the parents/carers! We went onto the bridge and around the park and arrived at the ducks and the children were delighted to feed them. Once the ducks were fed we sat down for a snack. The children were hungry and they let us know. They had, bananas, grapes, apples and a drink of milk.

I heard comments such as:

“I can hear the river, it’s noisy”

“The birds are singing”

“This is fun”

I had parents come up to me and say:

“Thank you for a lovely morning”

“Thank you, the morning has been really good.”

“I really didn’t want to come this morning, but I’ve really enjoyed myself. It’s been a lovely morning”.

After the snack break, Angie took out the parachute and we all played a few games.

Overall the event was a great success, it not only emphasizes on the healthy living aspect of the activity but also it gives parents/carers and children an opportunity to bond and socialize with other parents/carers. We have booked two more walking trips before the schools break off for summer and the nursery children and staff want to come again!
