Baby & Toddler Group, Windhill School - Autumn 2009 - Photos and report below

Baby & Toddler Group Windhill School

This group was already set up at Windhill Primary School. I went and introduced myself and my role at Windhill Community Centre. I asked if the group would like to incorporate health related activities within the session. Before I knew it a set of dates and times were confirmed between Angie and I.

Since then, there has been fantastic work done by this group. These youngsters range from 1 month to 5 years old! These sessions have been ongoing from early June this year and have proved to be a real success by both parents and children. The first session was around information on ‘The Eat Well Plate’ and now the children are baking Raspberry oat bars and Filo and spinach tarts!

This has been a great opportunity for me to work with parents and youngsters and get healthy eating messages across at an early age. This not only encourages parents but builds children’s confidence around eating healthy especially when they have been involved in the preparation of the food. Topics covered include, healthy pack lunches, fussy eaters, walking and much more. The sessions have helped in more than one way, for some individuals it was getting basic ideas on healthy pack lunches for others it was trying different foods and for some basic skills in preparing foods overall the session outcomes were met.

The group have progressed immensely and are now walking once a month. This group have been part of a sponsored walk and a recent trip to St Ives. There will be ongoing work with this group next year including a day in the Yorkshire Dales. I look forward to working with this group.

Below are some quotes from individuals:

“We’ve learnt something new today, something as simple as preparing a pineapple to eat. How fantastic is that.”

“I’ve never made a Smoothie before and I wouldn’t know where to begin!”

“This is a good idea to get the kids to eat fruit”

“Would definitely try them at home”

“I don’t like fruit much but this is a good and cheap way of eating fruits, will definitely be trying to make some at home”
